Winner of tamale contest announced

Oops, she did it again!

San Benito resident Irma Gonzalez, 62, was named the winner of the Second Annual San Benito News “The Best Tamales in Town” contest Friday of 17 competitors, making it the second time she’s won.

Taking second place was Ramona Montes, and third was a tie between Nubia Gomez and Patricia Lopez.

The contest judges, Place 4 San Benito City Commissioner Celeste Zepeda Sanchez, San Benito Economic Development Corporation Board Member and businessperson Shirley Vega, businessowner and San Benito Veterans Advisory Board Chair Victor Garza, San Benito CISD Child Nutrition Director Jana Landrum, Sales Representative for the News Yvette Ybarra all faced the tough task of eating tamal after tamal searching for “that perfect flavor.”
