A new grand champion has been crowned at the South Texas Youth Stock Show in San Benito on Friday.

Fifteen-year-old Ty Vasquez of Los Fresnos took home the award for STYSS Grand Champion Over-All Steer.

“He does a wonderful job,” said D.J. Wernecke, Vasquez’ Agricultural Science teacher. “His family has been doing this for years, and I think they do a phenomenal job. It’s not just about winning.”

Vasquez first received Bojo, his award winning steer, when it was only 3-months-old.

“It’s pretty hard (raising a steer),” said Vasquez. “You have to get up early every morning, and then you’re out there late working with them. It’s just a long process.”

According to Vasquez, he and Bojo spend almost every week competing at a stock show. Last week, Vasquez received the grand champion award for Bojo at the San Benito CISD stock show.

“At first it was really difficult working with (Bojo) because he’s wild, but after a while it gets easier,” Vasquez said. “It feels good because all of my hard work paid off. We just keep on doing what we’re doing, feeding him, walking him, giving him water to get him ready.”

Vasquez said that he plans to show Bojo at the Cameron County Fair and Livestock Show in Los Fresnos before competing in the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show in Mercedes.
