“She’s doing great,” said Danny De La Rosa, head coach for the San Benito High School girls’ cross country team, of his star runner, 18-year-old Brenda Lopez. “Right now, Brenda’s the number one kid in our region. That consists of San Antonio, all the way down.”
At last weekend’s cross country meet at the University of Texas San Antonio, Lopez proved her coach right by winning a gold medal. Lopez bested Devin Clark from Spring Branch Smithson Valley, 18:24.6 to 18:24.8.
“She raced some very good kids that had run faster than her in the previous year. She worked really hard all summer, and now she’s number one when last year she finished sixth.”
Lopez took the time to speak with the San Benito News on Thursday, September 20, right before her afternoon practice, to discuss her present training schedule, how it feels to win a gold medal at the UTSA meet and her ambition for the future.
