When thinking of some of the greatest love stories of all time, many great stories come to mine, such as Romeo and Juliet, Odysseus and Penelope, Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. It is rare when a story about actual individuals embody just about every trait of a true love story.
That is the case with Lupe and Maria Conde of San Benito.
Lupe H. Conde was born on April 20, 1918, and Maria G. Conde was born on Jan. 2, 1916. The two originally met in 1944 at the old train depot, a popular hangout at the time, where the Veterans War Memorial is now currently under construction. Maria used to work across the street with a manufacturer. Lupe, a World War II veteran, had come home on furlough with the Army.
According to Lupe, he was poor, but he dressed very well, that is what he believes attracted his wife to him. She says that he was very nice and well-mannered.
