San Benito police are still searching for a man who walked into the Cameron County Annex Building and reportedly threatened to kill himself.
According to San Benito Police Department Assistant Operations Chief Michael Galvan, the man, who has yet to be identified, walked into the indigent healthcare office located in the annex building at approximately 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and, while wielding a steak knife, began to shout.
“He was yelling that he was going to kill himself,” said Galvan, who described the man as being 5’4” and wearing a charcoal or grey in color shirt and blue jeans. “Everyone in the indigent office was out to lunch, so he went to the tax office and started yelling in there.”
It was at that point, Galvan said, that the man walked to a hallway and stabbed a picture with the knife.
“The blade broke off and he threw the handle in the hallway,” Galvan added. “He left the building after that, but we don’t know where he went to.”
As a precautionary measure, Galvan said the nearby San Benito High School, located on North Williams Road, was placed on lockdown.
In the meantime, San Benito police are still searching for the man. Galvan said school district police have also not encountered a man fitting the subject’s description.
“Right now we’re just hoping he turns up somewhere,” Galvan said.
