HARLINGEN – The doors of the J.C. Penny in Harlingen’s Valle Vista Mall usually do not open an hour early on a Saturday, or any other day for that matter. But this past weekend they made an exception.

The store joined forces with Sunny Glen Children’s Home and the San Benito Elks Lodge No. 1661 to buy $100 worth of clothes for each of the 18 children currently staying at the home. According to Gypsy Melton, the Lodge treasurer, the funds for such an action came from a grant from the Elks National Foundation, adding that although the foundation usually limits as much for groups of 12 children, they chose to augment it so that all 18 could participate.

Also included in the arrangement was the store’s salon giving free haircuts to the boys and hair styling to the girls. Before this, however, store manager Tomas Rodriguez invited everyone to a back room, where he offered all of the kids a free backpack filled with school supplies and an additional $15 gift card.
