They’re only a couple feet tall with cute purple ribbons in their hair, but don’t let these tiny girls fool you. Members of the South Texas Thunder Shetland team are national champions of the south zone.

The native San Benito girls, age 6 and under, have competed in several tournaments and practiced relentlessly for the moment when they would “go all the way.”

At the national tournament in Mandeville, Louisiana, the Thunder suffered their first lost, breaking an 88-game winning streak, and the girls were heartbroken. Coach Oscar Rodriguez said, “All the girls were down and crying. It was their first loss.”

But that loss wouldn’t stop them. Due to double-elimination rules, the girls still had one more chance to redeem themselves.
