Members of the San Benito Friends of the Library made sure that all the children who attended the nonprofit organization’s Back to School Celebration on Thursday went home with a backpack… free of charge.

“We had a wonderful time,” said Friends of the Library President Roberta Schoenmakers. “The Friends gave away 63 backpacks, but we had another three or so left over.”

The backpacks were filled with assorted school supplies, including glue sticks, folders, spiral notebooks, pens, pencils and crayons before being distributed at the event, which was held inside the San Benito Public Library meeting room.
