museumRIO HONDO – Pedro Castillo of Rio Hondo is on a mission.

Castillo is currently working to obtain a historical marker for Rio Hondo’s vertical lift bridge, which some have affectionately termed the “Golden Gate” bridge.

A town described as two-stop lights and one supermarket, citizens of Rio Hondo have long taken pride in the bridge, especially since it’s considered the only one of its kind in Texas.

“The bridge is unique to this area. Many times you see them in the upper eastern states in cities like Boston and Philadelphia, but not here,” said Rex Costley, district maintenance engineer of the Texas Department of Transportation.
