It’s in the numbers for students enrolled as freshmen at San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy as this year’s students chalked up a perfect 100 percent passing rate in geometry, two points higher than the state’s 98 percent passing, according to initial State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) results released earlier this week.
This year marks the first year that students enrolled as freshmen at Texas schools were required to take the new state assessment, with students testing in five main subject areas: English I reading, English I writing, Algebra I, biology and world geography.
Students in grades third through eighth also took STAAR exams for the first time this year, but the Texas Education Agency has not yet set the passing standards for those tests and will not release results until January.

VMA has an excellent principal and many excellent teachers! Equipment breakdown will happen in any school. Supplies sometimes are limited due to abuse such as running off hundreds of copies for personal use. Just like in all organizations not everyone is pulling their share. The accusation of the upper administration being benchwarmers maybe true since both superintendent and assist superintendent are rumored to retire soon. As far as cheerleading goes anyone that can afford it should be allowed to join the squad. Congratulating all VMA staff for your amazing turn around in one year… Look forward to your accomplishments next year!

I believe the school district is run by the Superintendent. The Superintendent made the necessary changes in order to get the job done @VMA. So, congratulations to the Superintendent, the board (old or new), the teachers, students, parents, and staff. It’s a TEAM effort, and they all deserve the credit. So please, give credit where credit is due.

If you knew what the teachers and staff had to deal with as far as the TEAM that is supposedly supporting them, I think you would feel a little different. Broken copiers, limited paper, budget cuts, not enough supplies, almost no parental involvement. These are the changes that you want to give credit for? I do agree with you that it is a TEAM effort but not every administrator is on board with the TEAM. I would even garner to say that many of the central office administrators seem to be more of BENCHWARMERS than actual participants. So, Ha!, the TEAM is really made up of the teachers and support staff that work with the students each and every day. THEY are who make the difference each and every day in the classroom, NOT the superintendent or school board (old or new). I do believe in giving credit where credit is due and in this case, the lion’s share of the credit goes to those talented teachers that receive little to almost no recognition for their grand efforts.
Can you imagine what an awesome district SBCISD would be if the superintendent and school board would spend three hours discussing academics and how to improve achievement rather than cheerleading tryouts? Is that the support that our academic TEAM really needs?
I agree with enlightened, superintendent and the board deserve none of the credit. However, they are responsible for the unacceptable rating the previous year.
Keep in mind not all the 9th graders took geometry. There was only about 2 or 3 classes of students who took geometry. so good job to the students,teachers and parents!

Mr. Limon and the old board had nothing to do with it. The TEACHERS are the ones that are in the classroom day in and day out. Not Limon or any board member. So I say to the math teachers at VMA, GREAT JOB! It is a testament to all your hard work and talent that you put in each and every school day. Pity that your own administrators and school board members fail to recognize what you do.
