emergency-lightsThe San Benito News is receiving reports that a San Benito High School sophomore died Monday in an apparent suicide attempt.

Officers with the San Benito Police Department confirmed that the child, identified as 16-year-old Ethan Hausler, died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head. It’s been reported that the wound may have been self-inflicted, but Michael Galvan, assistant chief of operations for the SBPD, said authorities will first investigate the case as a homicide as per protocol in cases involving potential suicides.

“We treat these type of situations as homicides first, and we also have to wait for the autopsy report before we can make any other determinations,” Galvan said.

The assistant chief added that the SBPD will be releasing more information today via cityofsanbenito.com.

Those close to the family informed the News of the incident Monday. Many friends of Hausler’s described him as a “quiet but kind” teen who loved music.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
