Much has transpired in the two weeks that have followed the San Benito CISD general election, which saw voters usher in a new era on the School Board of Trustees.
What’s not being talked about, however, is the fact that for the first time in the district’s history, the school board majority is now comprised entirely of women.
School district officials have confirmed that there’s only ever been one or two women occupying seats on the school board at a time.
Currently, on a board of seven, four of the seats are filled by June Aguilera, a young college student, Anna Cruz, a senior field trainer and analyst for the University of Texas at Austin, Fatima Huerta, who like Aguilera is also a young college student, and Yliana G. Rodriguez, the president of the board who also serves as a principal for a Los Fresnos elementary school.
But while enthusiastic about the increased female presence on the board, the general consensus of Cruz, Huerta, and Rodriguez has been simple: They’re not female board members but board members who happen to be female.

I don’t think it is pettiness to expose wrong doings. In this country, we elect people to take care of our business for us, that includes bringing to light any legal or illegal actions being made or considered. We trust those whom we elect to do the right thing for us, not to cover up wrongs just to appear as if they are “getting along.” Just like that letter to the editor the other day said, “I’d rather be dirty than uninformed.” Well I say, I’d rather know the truth, good or bad, than be ignorant. Continue bringing things to light Mr. Medrano…. you have more support than you know.
TO EDITOR: Isn’t it discriminatory to keep pointing out “young” to describe our school board members? After all, they can learn from their counterparts with more experience, and since the people of San Benito voted them in, wouldn’t it just serve all those involved to ensure these members are well informed instead of trying to put them down because they are young. So…
Medrano, get a life, help them instead of trying to bring the district down with your pettiness.
