Fundraising efforts are under way for Ray Saldaña and other organizers of the Second Annual Diabetes Fundraiser.
Saldaña said all monies donated at the March 24 event, which will entail a run/walk and Zumba event at San Benito’s Heavin Memorial Trail, will go toward the Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association (RGVDA) in hopes to fund preventive measures.
“People have become aware that there is a great need to support an organization like the Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association, being that a lot of us are predominantly Hispanics who’re susceptible to diabetes,” Saldaña said. “I’ve been involved in this event for three years, and I started to realize how many people had diabetes that I otherwise didn’t know. There are other great causes in the area, but we just elected to work on this one. It’s really great in the sense that people want to become a part of it to try to minimize and prevent diabetes in the Valley.”
