Tamales could be said to be a taste acquired early in life.
For example, at the tender age of nine, Jerry Garcia was introduced to them by his family.
“I would think it was probably my aunt who first gave me one, when I was visiting her. It was filled with beans, I think, and was very good,” he remembered fondly.
Now 15 years later, the 24-year-old San Benito native will be one of five judges in the Third Annual San Benito News “The Best Tamales in Town” contest.
Currently working at Smith-Reagan Insurance Agency in San Benito, Garcia lightheartedly promised not to show any favoritism toward bean tamales, this despite his fond recollection and partiality.
Still, like most tamale lovers, Garcia favors above all chicken or pork.
“I also wouldn’t be minding a bit of salsa on top or the side,” he added when questioned if he had a favorite topping.
For judging the contest entries, he has three simple categories. “I will judge on how well they taste, the texture, and how big they are,” he said. “And perhaps even originality.”
For the most part, entries this year will be judged on taste, texture, originality and presentation. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring one dozen of their best tamales to the News office by 12 noon on Friday, Dec. 16. A winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
