fireCameron County Emergency Management Coordinator Humberto Barrera said there will be no investigation into the destruction of a Rio Hondo brush truck during a recent fire that burned nearly 15 acres.

It all started at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 10, when two people residing in the vicinity of State Highway 345 (Sam Houston Boulevard) and Bishop Road noticed the blaze in a nearby field. Responding to the fire were San Benito and Rio Hondo firefighters, the latter of whom came equipped with the brush truck in question.

Barrera said the truck was destroyed after catching fire during attempts to contain the blaze. Despite reports on the contrary, however, Barrera said the truck, a 2008 Ford F-520, was not stuck nor did it malfunction during the extinguishing of the fire.

“Unfortunately, sometimes the fire runs a lot farther than trucks. It’s not the first time, and it might not be the last,” Barrera said.

Also, Rio Hondo Mayor Alonzo Garza reported Tuesday that the Rio Hondo volunteer firefighter treated for smoke inhalation was Danny Huerta, who was not the driver of the truck.

What has warranted investigation is the cause of the fire, which Barrera said he believes was as a result of illegal trash burning.
