emergency-lightsA warrant for third degree felony theft was issued recently for a San Benito man accused of embezzling nearly $90,000 from his employer.

A San Benito businessman who asked to remain anonymous said that he found a letter, allegedly signed by the Zetas, on his truck Monday that threatened the lives of his family if he didn’t pay $30,000.

Detective Arturo Flores of the San Benito Police Department (SBPD), however, confirmed Friday that the letter was falsely signed by the Zetas and was instead allegedly penned by Ramon Bautista of San Benito, who has been accused of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from the businessman in question.

“What he (Bautista) was doing was setting up contracts with clients, giving them the product, and then taking some of the money from the sales,” Flores said.

Furthermore, the detective said investigators from the Harlingen Police Department initiated the probe, this due to the letter being found at the businessman’s Harlingen residence, and were able to obtain a confession from Bautista.

“Harlingen (police) cooperated and gave us whatever they had as part of the investigation. They also had recordings of the interviews they had done with everyone involved. Through the interview, a video interview, Ramon Bautista admits what he was doing and taking money from the company,” Flores said. “I tried to get a warrant as soon as possible, but we were notified that he (Bautista) had gone to Mexico already, so it may be true that he left the area.”

Still, Flores said Bautista is listed as a person wanted for third degree felony theft.

Investigators encourage those with information that may lead to an arrest to call (956) 361-3880; anonymity will be upheld.
