The San Benito Lady ’Hounds’ historic season came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday as they were defeated by San Antonio O’Connor.

The 16-0 score of game two did not, however, reflect the performance of the Lady ’Hounds. The score was nothing but a number compared to the amount of fight and heart the Lady ’Hounds put into both games.

In fact, some would argue they played their best games in this series. Giselle Tamayo stopped a Lady Panther from reaching second base with an amazing throw to Amanda Garza. Amber Jasso pitched two amazing games in which she gave her all and resulted in injury. KC Sanchez stepped up and filled Jasso’s big shoes on the mound with no hesitation. Yesenia Penablanca, Dorothy Milan, and Mel Ramirez ran all up and down the outfield made outstanding catches. Adriana “Squirt” Flores and Kassandra Contreras were solid in the infield, picking up anything that came their way.

The Lady ’Hounds (34-5) became the first Valley team to ever reach the Elite 8 and their appearance in as much has already garnered attention from all over the state to Valley softball world. Their appearance will give those with much talent a chance at softball outside of high school, a chance at a higher education outside of the valley, and a chance to make San Benito fans even more proud by continuing their success and setting new goals. After all, the Lady ’Hounds just completed its best ever season after securing its seventh District 32-5A title, a bi-district, area, regional quarterfinals, and regional semifinals titles.

Head Coach Elias Martinez’ saying “Tradition Doesn’t Graduate” is even truer today than ever as seniors Garza, Contreras, and Penablanca and the rest of the Lady ’Hounds set a new tradition that will live past their graduation on Friday.
