It’s all over.

June Aguilera can now say, without doubt, that she is the new Place 4 San Benito CISD Board Trustee.

On Wednesday, May 18 it was reported that former trustee Joe G. Gonzalez had requested a recount after losing the election on Saturday by a slim margin of 17 votes, this according to uncanvassed votes. Gonzalez had received 1,363 votes and Aguilera had received 1,380.

The recount began at 8 a.m. inside the John F. Baron Administration Building and finished at approximately 1:30 p.m. In the end, Aguilera gained two votes to bring her total to 1,382, and Gonzalez gained three votes bringing his total to 1,366, a 16-vote margin in favor of the former.

Aguilera was in attendance for the recount and described the experience as “a long couple of hours.”

Gonzalez was not in attendance.

“I told people before that it was already official to me, because I didn’t see where those votes were going to come from,” Aguilera said. “He (Gonzalez) ran a very clean race, and I thank him for that. He was really respectful, and he was really kind about it not to be unfair.”

“And thank you for all the people who voted for me,” continued Aguilera. “Now, we can finally say that we won. They’re the ones who voted for me and put me here.”

Donald Shafer, Hector Mancillas, Emilia Salinas, and Jose Cavazos were selected by San Benito CISD Business Manager Emma McCall for the manual recount, of which Gonzalez paid an $800 deposit to hold.

Attempts by the News to gain comment from Gonzalez were unsuccessful as of presstime.

Will the revenge and hate ever end. We need to forgive and go on. We need a school board that is for the children first not for their own agenda. The school board needs to work as a team not as rivals. We are not in a football game, this is real life it affects real people. End the revenge and the hate and work together for the betterment of the children of San Benito CISD. Move on!!!!
