It has been just over two weeks since the fatal accident claimed the life of a San Benito teenager and left another injured, yet many questions remain unanswered as to what actually occurred on that day.
According to San Benito police and fire department officials, as well as eye witness accounts, a white 1997 Ford Expedition was traveling west on Ratliff Street before reportedly losing control and rolling over in excess of four times just east of Zillock Road Thursday, April 28 at approximately 5 p.m.
Police and fire department officials reported that the driver of the Expedition, 17-year-old Joshua Francisco Hernandez, was ejected from the vehicle and died shortly thereafter.
Since the story was first published in the May 1 edition of the San Benito News, numerous individuals claiming to be family and friends of those involved in the accident have taken to sbnewspaper.com with comments challenging the facts reported.
Authorities with the police and fire department, however, have stood by their reports of the accident.
Meanwhile, some claim that the caliche road does not have a sign displaying the speed limit and blamed the city for as much. But City Manager Manuel Lara verified Friday that Ratliff Street is a county road. Cameron County officials declined comment when asked whether adequate signage is located in the vicinity of the accident.
