Early voting for the City of San Benito General Election has broken a turnout record for the municipality as 1,271 voters cast their ballots at the poll. The tally exceeded the previous local record, which was 1,132 in 2008 – a 141-vote margin.
The turnout was so significant that the city’s early voting numbers rivaled that of San Benito CISD, which encompasses a wider jurisdiction of voters and extends beyond the community of San Benito. Specifically, the amount of early votes cast for San Benito CISD was 1,349.
The city elections may have been sparked by the heated campaigning of Mayor Jack Garcia and his opponent former Mayor Joe Hernandez, both of whom have been making headlines recently. There’s also Place 1 City Commissioner Antonio “Tony” Gonzales versus Joe F. Rodriguez and Roel Villarreal, and Pl. 2 incumbent Rene Villafranco versus Gavino Sotelo.
Board trustee races include Pl. 4 incumbent Joe G. Gonzalez going up against challenger June Aguilera, Pl. 6 incumbent Oscar Medrano versus Fatima Huerta, and Pl. 7 incumbent Manuel “Meme” Gonzales, Jr. taking on Julian Huerta. Pl. 5 incumbent Hector Leal is running unopposed.
Early voting was held from May 2 until Tuesday, May 10. Election Day is slated for Saturday, May 14. Pick up a copy of the May 15 weekend edition of the San Benito News, due to hit newsstands late Friday night or early Saturday morning, for information on polling locations.
