Early votes tallied in just two days time in the City of San Benito and San Benito CISD general elections have already surpassed prior campaign efforts by previous candidates, perhaps more especially in the former’s case.
Races pitting Mayor Jack Garcia versus former Mayor Joe Hernandez, Place 1 City Commissioner Antonio “Tony” Gonzales versus Joe F. Rodriguez and Roel Villarreal, and Pl. 2 incumbent Rene Villafranco versus Gavino Sotelo have attracted 384 votes to the polls – 215 on Monday, May 2 and 158 on Tuesday, May 3.
The June 2010 special election, which pitted Gonzales, then a challenger, versus former incumbent Rene Farias and an open race between Villafranco, Joe Avila and Jose Morales attracted just 133 votes in the same amount of time.
Although the increase in voter turnout in the first two days of early voting for the San Benito CISD election is not as dramatic as that of the city’s, a significant influx is apparent. Board trustee races highlighted by Pl. 4 incumbent Joe G. Gonzalez against June Aguilera, Pl. 6 incumbent Oscar Medrano against Fatima Huerta, and Pl. 7 incumbent Manuel “Meme” Gonzales, Jr. against Julian Huerta has thus far drawn 447 voters to cast their ballot.
The last school district election, held in 2009, brought in 370 voters in the first two days of early voting as well.
Early voting began May 2 and will last until May 10. For the city election, voters may cast their ballot at City Hall, located on 401 N. Sam Houston Blvd., from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Thursday and Tuesday. Early voting for the school district will be conducted at the San Benito CISD Tax Office, located on 152 E. Rowson St., from 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m.
