The South Texas Adult Resource and Training (START) Center held its Meet the Candidates forum, sponsored by the San Benito News, for the San Benito Municipal Elections on Wednesday evening at the Community Building.

Candidates from the upcoming city elections addressed an audience of about 70 people. City hopefuls in attendance were Mayor Jack Garcia, City Commissioner Place 1 challenger Joe F. Rodriguez, Pl. 2 incumbent Rene Villafranco, and his opponent in the race Gavino Sotelo.

Daisy Martinez of KGBT Channel 4 News served as moderator for the event, reading a combination of questions posted by readers on the San Benito News website, www.sbnewspaper.com, as well as questions from the attendance.

“I bring a wealth of experience to the community; I have over 40 years of experience working with municipalities,” said Sotelo in his opening statement. “I can bring some solutions to some of the problems in San Benito. It’s critical that we plan the future of our community.”
