San Benito High School runner Maria Hernandez is going the distance for the Lady ’Hounds.
During the district track meet Hernandez captured first place in both the 3200 run and the 1600 run which helped snag her a spot at the Regional Track Meet in San Antonio, not to mention contribute to the Lady ’Hounds’ fifth straight 32-5A track championship.
Although Hernandez made her trip to Regionals in two races she will only be running in the 1600 meter run, which will increase her chances as a contender for the state track meet. A shot at state would be a dream-come-true for this senior, who is a second year varsity runner.
The decision to choose her best race must have been difficult as just earlier this month at the district track meet she broke the school’s record in the 3200 meter run set by former track standout Cinthia Adame, who raced in the 800 meter run at the state track meet in 2009.
Lady ’Hound track head coach Danny De La Rosa praised Hernandez for pushing herself in just two short years and becoming one of the Valley’s best runners. After the Regional track meet being held May 2 and 3m Hernandez could very well be one of the state’s best runners.
“She worked really hard all year to make herself one of the Valley’s best runners and as the only senior on the varsity squad she showed the younger athletes what it takes to be one of the best,” gushed a proud De La Rosa.
“Her hard work has really paid off. She has an excellent shot to make it to state in the 1600,” he added.
The Lady ’Hounds are scheduled to embark for the Regional Track meet Monday, May 2 when the preliminaries are set to begin in San Antonio. A gold medal will ensure a spot at the state track meet.
