REMEMBERING DAD- Teen leaves for Navy on 10th anniversary of father’s death

As 19-year old Sturgis Zavala of San Benito stood by his dad’s grave on the 10th anniversary of his death Tuesday afternoon, the moment was nothing shy of bitter-sweet.
Lupe Zavala, Sturgis’ father, was shot and killed by his brother David Zavala after a drunken fight outside of their home on Austin Street in San Benito on February 16, 2006. At the time, Sturgis was days away from turning 11. Now ten years later, Zavala says he uses that haunting memory as motivation for his own future, proving the statement by departing to Navy basic training on Tuesday.
