Skate park, swimming pool on agenda for Tuesday’s meeting

Citizens with questions and concerns regarding the status of our City’s swimming pool and skatepark can address them to the City Commission Tuesday night as both items have been placed on the agenda for discussion.

Mayor Celeste Sanchez says she encourages anyone with questions to come out and address the Commission during public comments.

“We’d love the kids to come out and voice their opinions with any questions they may have about the skate park and the swimming pool too,” she said.  “Just know that this is not a workshop so we may not be able to answer all questions then and there but we can at least know what information is being requested and we can get back to them,” she added.

Sanchez added that the swimming pool topic had been somewhat in limbo since it was a project that former City Manager Manuel Lara was working on.  “I know he (Lara) had got some initial quotes from a local company and they first started at $80,000, but after examination it was more in the range of $100,000,” she said. “After he passed away though, the discussion kinda got set aside. We need to get a status report on both projects to see just what exactly needs to get done.”

No action is expected to be taken on either item, but citizens are still encouraged to come out to get a better understanding of what and how long it may take to get both projects underway and completed.

The City swimming pool has been closed a little over 7 years and the skate park has been closed for a little less than a year now.

The City had initial talks about moving the skate park to another location, (possibly near Stookey Park) however that topic has also been in limbo for quite some time now.

How many people actually would use a skatepark? Out of a population of roughly 24,000…. Why should taxpayers subsidize a small portion of the SB population. Clearly the whole town won’t use this park…..

I’d it’s exercise you want, how about running outside or riding a bike?

    1. People like to practice different kinds of sports. If no tax money should be spent in a sport that is growing among young people, then The City of San Benito should put back the skate park that they took away from Travis Street. That is my humble request.
      Thank you.

  1. I totally agree with the previous post. I want to personally Thank Commissioner Steve Rodriguez, who’s been fighting for the pool since he took office. Finally, there’s an elected official who cares about our children and community. Best of Luck Steve and you deserve all the credit.

We are dying for a new skatepark here, some skaters do not have transportation to reach a neighboring city’s skatepark. -entire RGV Skaters

  2. Please make all efforts to build the new skate park. Our children have been left with no skate park since it was removed. A skate park is very important to have, so our children can exercise and play outdoors. We’ve been waiting for months for the new skate park that was said to be built, but the project hasn’t even started yet.
    Thank you.
