A former San Benito graduate has just been named the Colorado State Teacher of the Year.
Leticia Ingram, a 1984 graduate of San Benito High School, was one of three finalists for the state-wide award and is the first Roaring Fork School District teacher to receive the state’s award.
The honor makes her Colorado’s nominee for national teacher of the year, and she will serve as a teaching ambassador to communities and organizations around the state and nation. After a visit to the white house, where she will meet countless officials, including President Barack Obama, a committee will overlook the 49 national finalists and name a national teacher of the year in April of next year.
“I had won smaller awards before, but I never thought I would be the winner of this award,” said Ingram. “The principal nominated me and when I found out that I had won, I was shocked but also very honored.”
As part of Monday’s ceremony, Ingram was also presented with a $1,000 scholarship to bestow on the student of her choice. “I just love working with kids and being able to help them grow,” added Ingram. “That’s really the best part of my job and I’m so happy I can do it on an everyday basis.”
