The San Benito Fire Department, along with several other fire departments and law enforcement agencies battled an intense grass fire on Sunday afternoon between Highway 100 and FM 732 in San Benito.
“It was a large grass fire, we were out there for about three hours,” said Fire Marshal Henry Lopez. “We had Brownsville, Los Fresnos, ourselves, and the Texas Forestry Service as well as DPS and county directing traffic, because it was causing problems with the roadways. But there were no accidents, according to Lieutenant T.J. Tijerina.”
The fire marshal also Med-Care EMS being on the scene to treat firefighters for smoke inhalation.
According to Lopez, the majority of the fire was mainly just grass burning, but strong winds made battling the blaze more difficult.
“Something like this is usually because of cigarettes,” Lopez said. “We don’t know for sure, that’s just an assumption on my part, we don’t know. It definitely wasn’t arson. Grassfires are almost impossible to find out how it got started, unless someone comes out and says that they were burning trash or something like that.”
