A candlelight vigil was held Thursday to help raise awareness of child abuse.
The event was held at Maggie’s House in San Benito, it was the 15th of such vigils held by the Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Center.
“It’s the first one that we’ve held in northern Cameron County,” said Ruben Serrano, Community Educator for the Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Center. “It’s to honor the children who were victims of abuse in 2010, more specifically to honor the children who lost their lives to abuse in 2010. We had four children in Cameron County who lost their lives to abuse.”
According to Serrano, Monica’s and Maggie’s House saw approximately 971 children in 2010.
“There were 971 kids in Cameron County who went through the doors of Monica’s and Maggie’s House who were alleged victims of abuse,” Serrano said. “That’s kind of a steady number that’s continued now for the previous 10 years. On average it’s probably about 1,000 kids who go through Monica’s and Maggie’s House.”
