Crystal Castillo, the cornerstone of the San Benito Lady ‘Hounds amazing run to the final four this year, will be continuing her softball career next year at Huston Tillotson University. Just one day after her 18th birthday, the 2- time All-Valley Player of the Year signed her letter of intent to play for the Lady Rams in Austin, Texas at the San Benito high school gym.

As a junior, Castillo led San Benito to a 13-1 record, racked up 165 strikeouts and allowed just eight total runs as a part time starter. That year, San Benito fell in the sweet 16 while battling several injuries to top contributors. However, her senior year was one of the most successful in Valley history as Castillo turned in a 30-4 record and over 300 strikeouts, eventually taking the Lady ’Hounds back to the state tournament. “I couldn’t have done any of this without great teammates and great coaches,” Castillo said. “They taught me so much and I had so much fun in my time here… I’m always going to be a Greyhound at heart.”

A big congratulations to this young lady and her family, who must be very proud. It is great to hear of one of San Benito’s own getting an opportunity to play at the next level, get an education, and help set herself up for a good life. Please keep working hard all SBCISD students; we need more stories like this one.
