batA bat was discovered outside the varsity gym of San Benito High School on Thursday, March 31 and tested positive for rabies.

According to San Benito CISD Superintendant of Schools Antonio G. Limón, the bat was discovered by some students on a wall outside the gym.

“It was never touched by any students. It was spotted on the walls, and we immediately called the city’s animal control. They picked it up and the test results determined that it had rabies,” said Limón. “The bat was spotted by some students, they told security about it, then the security called the office, and the office went ahead and called animal control.”

The bat was euthanized and taken to the San Benito Animal Hospital to be tested for rabies. The results of the test came back positive for rabies, a rarity among animals in the area.

With the revelation of the rabies virus in the area, many around town are making efforts to be proactive in preventing the spread of the virus among humans and animals.
