At least one family will have to find another place to sleep as a car chase led by the Harlingen Police Department (HPD) ended with a vehicle crashing head-on into a brick wall of the Heather Apartments in San Benito.
According to authorities on the scene, an HPD chase of a suspect, believed by bystanders to have been a drunk driver, began in Harlingen city limits and spilled over into San Benito sometime between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
It has been reported to the News that the chase eventually came to a stop when the driver of the suspected vehicle somehow lost control of the car while attempting to elude police through the narrow parking lot of the Heather Apartments, located on 2280 W. US Highway 77 in San Benito, and crashed into a brick wall. The incident caused extensive damage to a complex in which at least one family resides.
No injuries were reported; however, San Benito police, who assisted in the chase, confirmed that the apartment manager was making arrangements for the family who resided in the affected complex to stay elsewhere temporarily as the structure could be unstable as a result of the accident.
Neither Harlingen or San Benito police have confirmed if the driver of the vehicle in question, whose name and age have not been released, lived at the Heather Apartments. The origin and nature of the pursuit have also yet to be officially confirmed.
