LOS FRESNOS, TX—Residents, students, and local school district officials here are mourning the loss of a young coach who was killed in an early-morning vehicle accident.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identified the victim as 22-year-old Aaron Alejandro Garcia of Brownsville.
According to DPS officials, the incident occurred on Saturday, May 16, 2026, shortly after 2:30 a.m. on State Highway 550, north of State Highway 48, according to a press release.
Los Fresnos CISD later confirmed that Garcia served as a paraprofessional and a coach for the district.
According to DPS, a 2010 black GMC Sierra driven by Garcia was traveling northwest on SH 550 at an alleged unsafe speed when Garcia attempted to navigate a curve.
Garcia reportedly then lost control of the vehicle as it veered off the roadway. The Brownsville Fire Department (BFD) said the vehicle rolled over during the crash, injuring the driver.
Garcia later died while hospitalized, according to the DPS report.
Los Fresnos CISD Athletic Director David Cantu issued a statement regarding Garcia’s death, noting, “Los Fresnos CISD is deeply saddened by the passing of Aaron Alejandro “Alex” Garcia, a proud Falcon alumnus and valued member of the district.”
According to the school district, Garcia served as a paraprofessional at Liberty Memorial Middle School and Resaca Middle School, most recently at Resaca Middle School.
He also served as a middle school coach and as a high school baseball assistant coach.
Cantu’s statement goes on to say that Garcia was “known for his energy, passion, intelligence, and care for students. Coach Garcia made a meaningful impact on the lives of many Los Fresnos students and athletes. Los Fresnos CISD extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, students, and all who knew and loved him.”
According to his obituary, Garcia is survived by his parents, Alejandro and Sandra Garcia, and by his sister, Amanda Garcia.
Garcia earned an associate’s degree from Texas Southmost College in Brownsville and continued on a path to help others, according to his obituary.
“Alex had a special heart for children, especially those with special needs. Working with them was more than a job — it was his passion,” his obituary reads. “Through his work at Liberty Memorial and Resaca Middle School in Los Fresnos, he touched countless lives and formed meaningful friendships that felt like family.”
“Alex had a deep love for sports and the outdoors. He enjoyed coaching football and baseball and loved playing baseball and softball. Whether he was fishing, hunting, on the field, or simply outdoors, Alex found joy in every moment. Yet above all else, family remained at the center of his life,” his obituary continues. “No matter how busy he was, he always made time for family dinners, gatherings, and the people he loved most.”
