Both the San Benito High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams began District 32-6A play last week and into this week, each securing all-important victories.

The wins count toward their district ledger as they each look to qualify for the playoffs in mid-March.

In a district opener for both teams last week, the Greyhounds secured a 4-0 win at Brownsville Hanna.

Goals against the Eagles were scored by seniors Antwoan Alegria and Jiovanni Najera, junior Frank Barrientos, and freshman Gabriel Alvizo.

The SBHS defense played just as soundly as Hanna, and only allowed two corner kicks. The ‘Hounds had 11 corners and 12 shots on goal.

Then on Tuesday, the Los Fresnos Falcons visited Bobby Morrow Stadium and won in overtime, 2-1.

The ‘Hounds held a 1-0 halftime lead on a senior Elias Olvera goal, but that was as much as the team could muster offensively against a more competitive opponent. The ‘Hounds had a couple of corner-kick opportunities.

The match was also much more physical, as both teams combined for 42 fouls, with the ‘Hounds being called for 14 infractions by the field judge.

Los Fresnos improved to 12-4-2 this year.

Still, SBHS Head Coach William Huerta likes what he sees in his team, which is 1-1 in district and 8-4-1 this season.

“We take the losses as a learning experience to get better and do better, whether it is the next game or next season. The team has learned how much harder they need to work and to develop team bonding to be a better team this season,” Coach Huerta said. “They have been working hard since last spring, all the way through the first official day of soccer. We will take the season day by day and game by game, making sure we are better than the day before.”

The 1-1 record leaves SBHS tied for third place with the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers (9-4-1 overall record). The two teams meet next week in Brownsville.

The Lady Greyhounds had the same win-loss record as their male counterparts against the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles (won 3-2) and the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons (lost 6-1).

They are 1-1 and tied for third place with the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers, whom they face next week on the road.

SBHS Head Coach Wilbert Padron said the “victory was built on resilience, hard-fought physical battles, and belief.”

Among the players on the team, listed in order of their jersey numbers, are: (00) Valeria Ramos, (2) Mary Jayne Herrera, (3) Jeslyn Rosalez, (4) Alexia Delgado, (5) Madisann Murillo, (6) Mayeli Rodriguez, (7) Camila Guajardo, (8) Hailey Guerrero, (9) Yadhira Hernandez, (10) Danielle Davila, (11) Victoria Villalpando, (12) Alayna Navarro, (13) Liennai Allen, (14) Amy Herrera, (15) Arlene Montoya, (18) Valeria Soto, (19) Alana Siguentes, and (20) Angie Guitron.
