HARLINGEN, TX—The San Benito Lady Greyhounds and the state-ranked Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats have concluded the district portion of their schedule and qualified for postseason contention.
To advance, teams needed to finish in the top four of their respective districts.
San Benito competed in District 32-6A and finished tied for third, while Rio Hondo won its sixth consecutive District 32-3A title.
According to the University Interscholastic League, bi-district games are scheduled for Feb. 16-17, and second-round area games are being held Feb. 19-21.
SAN BENITO
The Lady ‘Hounds finished the regular district schedule with a 4-4 record. They were tied with the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons with identical records during the district, and each won at home against the other in January.
SBHS won convincingly the first time, 48-38, and two weeks later lost 39-36.
As a result, the Lady ‘Hounds played a seeding game in Los Fresnos on Friday.
It will be the fourth time this year the two schools have played. In December, at a Brownsville tournament, the Lady Falcons won 44-43.
In their last two regular district games, SBHS defeated the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers at home, 31-19, and lost to the Harlingen Lady Cardinals, 62-29.
Harlingen hoisted the district trophy after their home game Tuesday, at the expense of the Lady ‘Hounds.
SBHS had an overall 12-20 record going into the seeding game.
The Lady ‘Hounds are competing in the Class 6A Division 1. They are facing a team from District 31-6A.
RIO HONDO
The Lady ’Cats didn’t play this week, and their last game was a home win over IDEA Sports Park, 73-11.
Rio Hondo’s final district record was 16-0, and it improved to 27-1 on the year, good enough to be ranked No. 1 in the Texas Girls’ Coaches’ Association’s statewide poll.
The Lady ’Cats’ lone blemish was a loss to the Lyford Lady Bulldogs at the Santa Rosa Tournament in November.
RHHS will compete in Class 3A Division I, with its bi-district game against a District 31-3A team.
