Various sports seasons for San Benito and Rio Hondo high schools are well underway.

Tuesday was a busy day for varsity basketball teams, as wins and losses determined their standings in the district.

San Benito boys’ and girls’ hoops teams are just getting started in district play, so their games are especially important to win.

For the Greyhounds, who opened District 32-6A play, their road game against the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers ended in a 56-44 loss.

The Veterans notched their first district win, improving to 1-1 and moving them into third place, ahead of SBHS and the Brownsville Hanna Eagles (0-1).

The ‘Hounds will play the Veterans again at home on February 6.

Before they can get revenge, they will host the Harlingen Cardinals on Friday at 6 p.m. The Cardinals, who are district leaders with a 2-0 record, are coming off a 63-60 win over the Los Fresnos Falcons, who fell to 1-1 and are in second place.

SBHS is 0-1 in district and 7-17 on the season.

The Lady Greyhounds, who won their first two district games, tasted their first setback Tuesday.

They lost to the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers, 41-31, but remain in second place in the district, behind Harlingen (3-0).

SBHS and Harlingen clash Friday at home beginning at 730 p.m.

The Veterans improved to 2-2 and are in third place ahead of Los Fresnos (1-2) and Hanna (0-3).

The Lady ‘Hounds are 10-17 overall.

The top four teams in the district advance to the postseason in both boys’ and girls’ play.

For Rio Hondo, district openers were weeks ago, and both Rio Hondo squads are in the middle of district play.

The Bobcats are striving to be one of the top four teams to qualify for the postseason, and the Lady ’Cats continue to show not only district foes but also the state that they are a formidable opponent.

The Bobcats earned an important district victory on Tuesday, defeating the Progreso Red Ants, 72-42, securing their position in the District 32-3A standings and moving them into fourth place.

RHHS has been on a tear, earning four consecutive district wins. They are 10-10 overall.

The Lady ’Cats finally got back to playing basketball after winning two consecutive forfeits by IDEA schools last week.

For the Progreso Lady Red Ants, it was a 98-16 loss.

The Lady ’Cats improved to 11-0 in district and 22-1 on the year.

The Texas Girls’ Coaches Association still ranks the Lady ’Cats first in the Class 3A state poll, ahead of Coahoma (25-1).

Other South Texas teams ranked in the TGCA poll are No. 13 Corpus Christi West Oso (21-4), and No. 24 London (23-6).
