San Benito High School female athletes in both wrestling and powerlifting showed their grit in competition last week and earned top honors.

The SBHS Lady Greyhounds captured consecutive district dual titles in wrestling after competing against numerous Rio Grande Valley teams.

Last Saturday at Weslaco High School, the 16-6A District Duals Championship title went to SBHS.

To achieve this, the Lady Greyhounds earned victories over Los Fresnos, Weslaco, PSJA, Harlingen, and La Joya.

SBHS was represented on the wrestling mat by: Evelyn Balderas, Briana Castillo, Madison Castillo, Natalie Cisneros, Alyssandra De La Rosa, Nayeli Esquivel, Violeta Gallegos, Deyanira Garcia, Lyanne Garcia, Ruby Lucio, Michelle Macias, Miah Morales, Angelli Ortega, Savannah Ramirez, Katelyn Rodriguez, Shaila Sosa, and Ahlysin Zavala.

“This achievement marks our program’s back-to-back District Duals Championships,” San Benito Head Coach Kristen Longoria said.

SBHS competes next at the District 16-6A Tournament at the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

At the Brownsville Rivera Invitational, the SBHS girls earned first place, and coaches said it was quite an impressive statement.

“Bringing home first place as a team is a powerful achievement, and it reflects the hard work, commitment, and heart these student athletes bring to the platform,” Head Coach Robbie Mesa said.

Individual results are as follows: Michelle Cisneros, first place (97 lbs.); Maria Delgado, first place (105 lbs.); Chloe Gutierrez, first place (114 lbs.); Hailey Galatia, first place (123 lbs.); Jordan Garza, second place (132 lbs.); Kassandra Williams, first place (148 lbs.); Danielle Padilla, first place (198 lbs.); and Laurabella Sanchez, first place (242-plus lbs.).

“We are so proud of this championship team and the strength, confidence, and excellence they continue to build for San Benito,” Coach Mesa said. “The bar is high, and these ladies keep raising it higher.”

Their male counterparts in wrestling also earned a top ranking at Simon Rivera High School.

At the invitational, among SBHS wrestlers placing first were Allen Trevino, Ramiro Cervantes, and Adrian Santos.

Mario Mora and Nathan Banda placed second, and Adam Herrera placed fourth.

“Their dedication, discipline, and strength were on full display,” Head Coach Danny Cortez said. “Each athlete competed with determination. They raised the bar and continue building a culture of excellence.”
