St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito is hosting its annual Fall Festival Oct. 4–5, welcoming families, friends, and neighbors for two evenings of food, music, and fellowship.
Brisket sandwiches, beef and fajita tacos, tamales, menudo, turkey legs, funnel cakes, aguas frescas, baked goods, and more will be available for purchase. Rides, thrift sales, Lotería, a cake spin, face painting, and live music will round out the celebration.
Originally, the parish began as a mission under St. Benedict, and by 1950, Holy Mass was held on Sundays for nearby communities. In 1953, a six-room school was established and run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
Known as St. Theresa School, it served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. St. Theresa was formally established as a parish in 1966, growing over the decades to meet the spiritual needs of San Benito residents. “We want newcomers to feel welcome and participate in the liturgy services, to include the family in the procession of offering of gifts, and register as parishioners,” said volunteer and churchgoer Anna de la Fuente.
The festival itself reflects the parish’s long-standing commitment to community. “Families come to enjoy fellowship with friends and other members of the church community. Children enjoy rides, games, food, the cakewalk, and Lotería,” said parishioner Olga Canas.
Organizers say the variety of food and activities ensures everyone can participate. “Everyone has a good time, from a child to an adult, and they return yearly for the festival, enjoying new treats and music, an evening of recreation for everyone, meeting old acquaintances,” said perisher and organizer Maria S. San Pedro.
Faith remains at the core of parish life, guiding outreach and programs. “We are strengthened by the grace which gives us hope in times of trial. We manifest the good values of our community as we participate in the sacraments,” said de la Fuente.
That spirit of service goes beyond the church walls. “We further the body of Christ by our generosity, with service and hospitality to all people, especially the most needy,” said Canas.
The Fall Festival takes place on Saturday, October 4, from 5 to 10 p.m., and Sunday, October 5, from 5 to 9 p.m., at 1300 Combes Street, San Benito. For donations, volunteering, or more information, contact Celina P. Garza at 956-792-5515.
