Laureles Regional Park, also known as Laureles County Park, a long-favored gathering spot for families and youth sports in the San Benito area, is set for a significant transformation after Cameron County secured a $750,000 federal grant to revitalize the community space.

The funds, awarded through the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund and distributed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will cover half of the $1.5 million project.

County officials anticipate work will be completed by September 2028.

The planned upgrades are significant. A new nature trail, bordered with native plants, will meander through the park, while an expanded playground and outdoor fitness stations, shaded from the South Texas sun, are expected to attract families and health enthusiasts alike.

Renovated picnic areas, upgraded signage, and sustainable irrigation powered by a rainwater catchment system are also included. Solar lighting and updated sports-field lighting will replace outdated infrastructure, enhancing safety and efficiency.

This project demonstrates our commitment to enhancing quality of life, promoting health and wellness, and protecting our natural environment. We thank the National Park Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife for their partnership and support. Thank you to Senators Cornyn and Cruz and Representative Vicente Gonzalez for advocating for this award,” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviñio, Jr. in a prepared statement.

Commissioner Precinct 3 David A. Garza said that the investment will change how the community uses and enjoys the park.

“This is a transformative investment in one of our most valued community spaces. Laureles Regional Park has long been a gathering spot for families, youth sports, and outdoor activities. With this funding, we’re making improvements to be more inclusive, sustainable, and enjoyable for future generations,” Garza said.

Nestled in the San Benito area, Laureles Regional Park has long been a central part of community life in Precinct 3. County leaders stated that the additional resources will help keep the park safe and inviting, while also guiding it toward a more sustainable future.
