Parks accepting credit cards

Visitors to Cameron County parks now have a more convenient way to pay tolls.

As of Monday, September 8, 2025, the first phase of the county’s toll collection system upgrade was finished, allowing credit card payments at several popular sites.

The upgrade currently affects Isla Blanca Park, Cameron County Beach Access No. 5 at Atwood Park, Cameron County Beach Access No. 6, and Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park and Speckled Trout Park in Rio Hondo.

Visitors can use Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover at these locations.

Renovations are ongoing at Andy Bowie Park and Cameron County Beach Access No. 3. Once completed, these sites will also accept credit card payments, making park access more convenient.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. stated that the improvements are designed to enhance the visitor experience.

“This upgrade marks a significant step forward in modernizing our toll system and enhancing the overall visitor experience. By offering credit card payment options at our lanes, we provide park visitors with greater convenience and flexibility. We appreciate the public’s patience and support as we move toward full system implementation,” he said in a prepared statement.

County Commissioner Sofia C. Benavides emphasized the county’s dedication to accessibility.

“Improving infrastructure that prioritizes accessibility and convenience is one of our top goals. The completion of this first phase is a great example of how we are working to enhance everyday services for our residents and visitors. I’m excited that all County Coastal Park Toll Collection lanes will now accept credit cards,” she said.

Cameron County Parks Director Joe E. Vega highlighted the practical benefits for visitors.

“We’re excited to announce the completion of the first phase of our toll system upgrade. Adding credit card payment options is an important step toward creating a more efficient and user-friendly experience for all visitors. This progress reflects the vision and hard work of the Cameron County Commissioners Court, as well as their dedication to delivering practical, forward-thinking solutions that truly make a difference when visiting our County Parks. We thank all visitors for their patience and cooperation during the upgrade process and remain committed to enhancing your experience at our County Park toll collection facilities,” he said.

Judge Treviño also shared the announcement on Facebook. “Major Upgrade Announcement. Phase one of the  Cameron County Parks toll collection system upgrade has been completed, and credit card payments will now be accepted. This upgrade marks a significant step forward in modernizing our toll system and enhancing the overall visitor experience. By enabling credit card payment options at our lanes, we are providing park visitors with greater convenience and flexibility.”

Officials further said that the project reflects the county’s ongoing effort to modernize its infrastructure and enhance services for residents and visitors.
