The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District [SBCISD] Board of Trustees and the City of San Benito City Commission met for a special joint meeting last Wednesday evening to discuss initiatives centered on student success, with an emphasis on career preparation and community spaces for students and families.

The nearly two-hour April 30 meeting included a presentation by City Manager Fred Sandoval on an educational partnership with the San Benito Economic Development Corporation, South Texas College, and Region One.

Early in the meeting, he reminded participants, “Your children are our children.” Officials emphasized the importance of students having clear plans for their future, with access to career opportunities in fields such as technology, healthcare, and education. The partnership aims to create workforce development programs aligned with regional job growth to prepare students for professional success.

Also under review was the City’s comprehensive plan, focusing on collaborations with SBCISD to develop parks on school district land. Discussions included optimizing ways to use these community spaces for educational activities during school hours and for recreational opportunities for families and students after school.

Many in attendance agreed that fostering stronger community ties would benefit families for years to come.
Summer recreation programs were discussed to support student well-being, with plans to open school gyms for youth activities and provide free meal programs during the summer break. Park improvements, including storm-water detention facilities, were examined to protect school infrastructure and reduce flooding, creating safe spaces for year-round student and community use.

The coordination of school bus routes with the City’s traffic plan was reviewed with proposed changes aimed at enhancing safety for students traveling to and from school. A real-time crime center was also discussed in depth to improve public safety coordination, ensuring safer environments for schools and surrounding family spaces. The state-of-the-art system allows quicker response times and enhances overall public safety.

Additional agenda items included updates on the City’s water tower rehabilitation, with Place 1 Commissioner Tom Goodman expressing concerns about maintaining a safe water supply. A proposed master park plan community meeting schedule was also introduced to gather public feedback on recreational spaces that serve students and families.

No formal decisions were made. A full video recording of the meeting and the official agenda are available on the San Benito CISD website at www.sbcisd.net and the City of San Benito’s agenda center at cityofsanbenito.com.
