HARLINGEN, TEXAS—San Benito High School senior Krysta Serrata earned an opportunity to compete with some of the best South Texas golfers as she qualified for the regional tournament being held later this month.

Following her play at the District 32-6A Golf Tournament at Treasure Hills Golf Course, Serrata finished with a 97-92–189 score.

San Benito Golf Coach Henry Valle, who served as the district tournament director, spoke to his players on the links.

Serrata, he said, was penciled in as the team’s top golfer. He was pleased with her play and the fact she improved by five strokes the second day was a testament to her knowledge of the game and course.
San Benito finished third as a team with a score of 427-411–838.

Each golfer showed improvement during the tournament’s second day of competition.

San Benito senior Bianca Saucedo (102-100–202), senior Damiana Navarro (112-105–202), and sophomore Nadia Rostro (116-114-230) excelled.

District champion Los Fresnos had the best team showing with a score of 333-341–674, followed by Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s 401-399–800. Both teams qualified for the regional tournament.

Los Fresnos was composed of the following golfers: Isabella Ramirez (78-82–160), Maddison Woodward (86-85–171), Avy Martinez (76-82–158), Liliana Laraga (98-92–190), and Annali Valdes (93-92–185).

The two-day district tournament was held after pre-district play was canceled due to inclement weather that had drenched the Treasure Hills playing course that San Benito golfers use as a home to practice during the golf season. San Benito and other Rio Grande Valley golfers had tournaments canceled due to rain or frigid temps since February.

Coach Valle had nothing but admiration for his girls’ and boys’ teams. They have literally stayed the course and practiced their golfing game. Their last tournament was Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in Weslaco.

The Class 6A Region IV girls’ tournament is April 14-15 at Brackenridge Golf Course, 2315 Avenue B, in San Antonio.

On the boys’ side, Harlingen took the title with an overall score of 693, followed by Los Fresnos’ 715, both teams are regional qualifiers.

San Benito had five golfers compete and finished 400-376–776. Two Brownsville Veterans Memorial teams and Brownsville Hanna finished ahead of San Benito.

Among the boys to compete were senior Raul Melendez (94-97–191), senior Ryan Lugo (105-98–203), junior Joseph Tamez (96-87–183), junior Mario Landin (105-108–213), and sophomore Christian Gómez (114-94–208).

San Benito entered two golfers in medalist competition, too, including senior John Davila (97-125–222), and sophomore Felix Sauceda (124-108–232).

Los Fresnos was made up of the following golfers: Levi Bennet (76-81–157), Jay Gomez (93-86–179), Marco Garza (85-90–175), Sebastian Paez (105-99–204), and Nestor Rodriguez (108-105–203).

The Class 6A Region IV boys’ tournament is on April 16-17 at Silverhorn Golf Course, 1100 W Bitters Rd., in San Antonio.
