One of the most memorable baseball games the San Benito Greyhounds played this season concluded in a 1-0 victory at home over the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers.
The defensive-minded game played in eight innings went the way of the ‘Hounds after junior Ethan Garza, facing a 2-2 count with two outs, hit safely to right field, bringing in the contest’s only run.
With two outs, San Benito’s Mauro Arizpe got on base after being hit by a pitch. The game-winning play by Garza was set up when Arizpe later was in scoring position at second base. He advanced after Gabriel Covarrubias smacked San Benito’s first hit of the game in the same inning.
“We won this game because of Mauro; he pitched really well tonight to give us the chance to stay in this game,” a jubilant Garza said.
Garza was mobbed by his teammates after getting the hit and watching his teammate Arizpe beat the throw to home.
Arizpe struck out 11 Veterans Memorial batters and allowed three runs in 6.2 innings on the mound. Aiden Barrera came in relief and kept Brownsville batters at bay.
“This was a great game that I’m so glad we won,” Arizpe said. “We never gave up as a team. I’m real proud of our team.”
San Benito Head Coach Ramiro Partida, Jr. was glad to be on the winning side of an extra innings game. San Benito had fallen in games against Los Fresnos and Weslaco in previous season(s).
More importantly, this victory enabled the ‘Hounds to improve their District 32-6A record to 2-1.
Unfortunately, San Benito lost their next game to Harlingen, 7-0 and has an even record at the halfway mark of district action. San Benito still has an opportunity to improve its record with the second half of district play set to begin next week (April 11) at Brownsville Hanna.
