The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Baseball Team got its first victory of the young season in a big way when San Benito earned an at-home no-hitter against the Edinburg Bobcats this week.
Greyhounds’ Head Coach Ramiro Partida reported that three pitchers combined for the no-no in the 6-2 victory.
Starting winning pitcher Robby Leal went 6 1/3 innings, followed by Gabriel Covarrubias (one inning), and Mauro Arizpe, who earned the save.
On offense, Justin Montemayor, Ethan Garza, and Arizpe each had two hits; Tony Garcia and Josh Baez had one hit each.
The victory comes at a good time as the ‘Hounds are in the process of hosting their own four-team Baseball Classic Tournament through Saturday.
They played Donna North and Raymondville Thursday, and will play Marine Military Academy Friday at 3 p.m.
The tournament championship is slated for 11:30 a.m. Saturday with the third-place game at 9 a.m. the same day.
San Benito had a 1-2 record entering the tournament. Losses came against Edinburg Economedes (10-0) and Mission Veterans Memorial (4-0).
They are entered in the Edinburg Tournament from March 6-8. They will play McAllen Nikki Rowe (9 a.m.) and Edinburg Vela (4:30 p.m.) on March 6, and Sharyland (5:30 p.m.) March 7.
The ‘Hounds will begin play in District 32-6A at home on March 25. Their district finale is at home against Harlingen on April 25.
