The City of San Benito recently announced registration for its official Protect Our Nation’s Youth [PONY] baseball and softball teams. Registration is open to children ages 4-12. Applicants do not need to live in San Benito to register and participate.

Previously, the San Benito Youth Baseball and Softball League, a non-profit organization, managed the city’s teams. Now, San Benito is teaming up with PONY to create officially sanctioned teams. There are age-specific divisions: Foul is for 4-year-olds, Shetland is for 5-6, Pinto is for 7-8-year-olds, Mustang is for children 9-10 and Bronco is for ages 11-12.

The registration fee is $45 and applicants will receive a team shirt and cap. Those who wish to join the teams must still purchase softball pants, socks, and cleats. According to the registration listing, registration closes on Jan. 31 for both sports.

According to a press release from the City, the games will be held at Stookey Park. Participants can expect a great opportunity to “connect with others, stay active, and build lasting memories.”

The release continued to say that the City needs volunteer coaches for both sports seasons. Those who wish to apply for the position must complete a criminal background check. They will be given an equipment bag for their teams “to ensure they have the tools needed for a successful season.”

According to the official PONY website, they are a program that works to create a “fundamentally sound and challenging game for children of all ages” without sacrificing safety. To ensure this, PONY mandates that children play alongside and against their own age group. According to PONY officials, they constantly train their coaches to ensure their athletes are playing the most up-to-date version of the sport, creating an ever-innovative playing field.

The softball and baseball season begins March 17. For more information on the softball and baseball leagues, or to register as a prospective coach, call San Benito Parks and Recreation at (956) 361-3800. Team registration is available online on the City of San Benito’s Facebook page. Stookey Park is located at 528 Stookey Road, San Benito.
