DA talks animal care in cold weather

BROWNSVILLE, TX—As temperatures drop, the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office urges all residents to provide adequate care and shelter for their pets, as required by Texas law.

Under Section 821.102 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, it is unlawful to leave a dog outside and unattended by use of a restraint unless the animal has access to adequate shelter, Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz reminds the public.

In a press release, Saenz added these specifics: Adequate shelter is defined as a sturdy structure:
• Protecting the dog from inclement weather, including freezing temperatures.
• Allowing the dog to stand, sit, turn around, and lie down in a normal position.

Failure to comply with this law may result in citation or arrest for animal cruelty. The health and well-being of animals are a shared responsibility, and this law ensures that pets are treated humanely, especially during harsh weather conditions, Saenz stated.

To strengthen the county’s commitment to preventing animal cruelty, Nikki Daniel, Cameron County’s Animal Cruelty Investigator, is actively working with law enforcement and the community to enforce these regulations. In support of this effort, Assistant District Attorney Melissa Munoz is Cameron County’s newly designated Animal Cruelty Prosecutor.

Saenz emphasized the office’s commitment, saying, “The protection of animals speaks volumes about a community’s character. Together, we can create a compassionate and safe environment for all creatures in Cameron County.”

To report any suspected animal abuse or neglect within Cameron County, contact the Cameron County Environmental Health Department at (956) 247-3599.

Saenz concluded by remarking, “The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office is grateful for the community’s support in ensuring that animals are treated with dignity and respect.”
