Colleagues: Layton’s passing a major loss to music

It’s a loss of epic proportions.

This is the reaction shared by many affiliated in the arts regarding the death of Benigno “Benny” Layton, one of the inductees in the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame in San Benito.

Rey Avila, president of the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum and an avid fan of Layton’s expressed sadness, and lamented as much in a telephone interview with the News on the passing of a musician turned educator turned public servant.

“It was a really a sad day for anybody who is into music,” Avila said of his reaction Saturday when hearing that Layton had succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicular accident. “He was really a great musician and accordionist, and of course a great human being, and humble.”

Avila added, “He will be missed. He was very popular here in the Valley. His music was really in demand.”
