Diane Hurman said she’s on a mission.
The concerned citizen has taken issue with the City of San Benito’s plans to turn the municipal pool at Stookey Park into a skate/spray park.
“I think that everybody should have access to a place where they can learn to swim. It’s very good exercise, and we have very hot weather,” said Hurman. “You can’t be outside jogging at 2 p.m. You can’t be playing on a swing-set, it’s too hot. But you can be swimming and exercising.”
Hurman, who has lived in San Benito for 12 years, cites an obesity problem among today’s youth as another reason to prevent the pool from being decommissioned, this to continue to offer resources to encourage a more active generation.
“We have an obesity problem because they lay around the house, eat, and watch TV too much or play video games, and they need to be out exercising,” said Hurman. “I live for going to the pool in the summer. That was the big event. I can’t imagine a city with all these children that have no place to go swimming. We should not expect our people to go over and utilize the facilities in Harlingen. Why can’t we afford a swimming pool for our families?”
