Child injured during argument

On Sunday, December 31, 2024, at approximately 11 a.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on the 17000 block of FM 800 in the San Benito area regarding a suspected injury to a child.

According to a Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) press release, upon arrival, Sheriff’s Deputies made contact with the mother of a reported five-year-old victim. The victim’s mother told deputies that her niece, 22-year-old Destiny Marie Navarro, was arguing with her 62-year-old grandmother. The victim’s mother continued to explain that Navarro was holding the victim while the argument was taking place.

According to a CCSO report, the victim’s mother accused Navarro of allegedly throwing the victim towards the floor, causing the victim to hit her head and back area on the living room floor. Sheriff’s Deputies proceeded to make contact with Navarro, who was said to be holding the child at the time.

According to Sheriff’s Deputies’ accounts, Navarro then began to allegedly shake the victim, causing the victim’s head to move back and forth, potentially causing further injury to the child. Sheriff’s Deputies intervened by physically removing the child from Navarro’s grasp.

Navarro then proceeded to allegedly strike and kick the Sheriff’s Deputies multiple times, reportedly causing minor injuries to the deputies.

During the investigation, Sheriff’s Deputies learned that Navarro had prior arrests for family violence, and she had an active arrest warrant for the said charge.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Navarro and transported her to the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment.

Navarro is charged with Injury to a Child; TPC 22.04, a Third Degree Felony, Continuous Family Violence; TPC 25.11, a Third Degree Felony, and Assault Public Servant; TPC 22.01, a Third Degree Felony.
