RIO GRANDE CITY, TX—With the winter months upon us, the San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ Varsity Basketball Team continues to heat up. The Resaca City ladies notched their sixth win in the last seven games and have amassed 14 team victories before district play begins for the second consecutive season. Led by a superstar scorer and elite role players, San Benito just might have established itself as the favorite for the 32-6A crown.
In their latest game, a 31-28 nail biter over Rio Grande City, the Lady ‘Hounds saw three players scoring over eight points. With Angelina Reyes held to just seven points in the game, the rest of the players were able to step up in a big way.
“I’m always proud of the work every girl puts in, and I think they all have the opportunity to contribute at a high level,” said Head Coach Abel Moreno. “Everyone on this team can score, and they can all defend”
The leading scorer for the Lady ’Hounds against Rio Grande City was Lorena Segura — a senior guard who hit four of nine shots on the night. Segura is having a strong season herself, averaging close to five points with two rebounds and two assists per contest.
The close win against Rio Grande City came just a week after San Benito blew out the Mercedes Lady Tigers, 53-34.
In that game, Reyes and Jade Maya took care of the scoring, combining for 29 points on just 20 shots. Senior forward Daisy Esquivel added five points, five rebounds, and two assists. Reyes has been the absolute star for the Lady ’Hounds, leading the team in scoring for the third straight season, Reyes is putting up a whopping `18 points a game in 2023.
