After suffering their first loss of the year in the regular season finale against Weslaco, the San Benito Greyhound Varsity Football Team returned to its dominating ways in the first round of the playoffs last week.
Facing off against the 31-6A Edinburg North Cougars, San Benito cruised to victory behind a bruising run game, coming away with a 42-10 victory in front of the home crowd at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The win gives the Greyhounds their second consecutive bi-district championship and double-digit winning season and ensures at least one more week of Greyhound football.
The San Benito offense came out of the gate firing on all cylinders as Fabian Garcia turned a quick toss on the game’s second play into a 48-yard score. The Cougars managed a long field goal on their first drive, but that proved to be the beginning of the end for the visiting team from Edinburg.
After a San Benito punt, the Cougars were looking to take a surprising early lead. Still, senior free safety Brandon Hernandez picked off a deep pass attempt and delivered an electric return to the two-yard line. A quick touchdown later, San Benito held a 14-3 lead before the first quarter ended.
The rest of the game consisted of long Greyhound scores and disappointing attempts to move the ball by Edinburg North. A 39-yard touchdown run by senior Aaron Garza on fourth and two took the life out of the Cougar defense and pinpoint passing by quarterback Aaron Corona ensured the ’Hounds an easy win.
